About Dark Star Philosophia

Dark Star Philosophia is on Historic Bearskin Neck in Rockport, Massachusetts: a small seaside village 40 miles north of Boston, known for its artistic community, quaint shops and beautiful ocean views.
We are located directly on the ocean, overlooking Old Harbor, a small harbor enclosed by 3 granite wharves. Rockport’s “Sandy Bay” and two beaches lie beyond. The foundation of our building is a granite seawall, and inside the gallery are old fireplaces and a stone floor, all made of granite.
Dark Star Philosophia is one of the last remaining places to view Philip Shumaker seascapes. He designed our building around the existing stonework a few years before his death in 1967. Some of his finest paintings are on display here.
Opened in 1993, Dark Star Philosophia is now run by Philip’s daughter, gera shumaker. We have jewellery and crafts, music and gift items, Tarot decks, incense, healing oils, and books: with a focus on healing and spiritual growth. Hence the title “Philosophia”– a Greek word meaning “Love of Wisdom”. (The DARK STAR itself was one of gera’s grandmother’s pins – an eight-pointed star made of dark red garnets).
