Earth Day and May Day

Weather is always an interesting topic in Rockport, as it is anywhere in New England. There is a saying: If you don’t like the weather in New England, wait an hour. It will change. This year is certainly no exception. It’s been a cold winter, and the cold is not letting go easily. Spring has been having a tough time breaking through.

But the sun has given us some gorgeous days. And here at Dark Star Philosophia, we are celebrating Spring. Earth Day was April 22nd, and we honored Earth Day right on through the weekend. We would like to mention a number of our products, that we carry on a regular basis, featured on this very special holiday:

  • Earth Flags, in 3 sizes: Large, Medium, & Car Antenna
  • Earth Marbles
  • Books on Living in Harmony with Mother Earth:

  • Music – Songs of the Earth (Healing Chants, Faeries, Original American, Celtic)
  • Earth Echoes Crystals – Harvested without harming our Earth
  • Louisa Poole’s Merryday Tarot – Featuring Earth Spirits and Little People
  • Earth Day is a very new holiday, celebrated in our area with considerable zeal. I will say what I have always felt: that the local emphasis on picking up the litter that trashes our beautiful Earth has been a good start, but far from sufficient. So much more harm is being done to our Land than simple littering. So much more emphasis is needed on the beauty of our Planet – this living, breathing, sentient being that is our home and our mother, and whose name is Gaia. Very simply put, what we need as humans is to feel the very deep love in our hearts that connects us with the Land we live on.

Let me correct that last statement. I believe that most of us DO feel that strong and deep connection. There are very few of us who do not appreciate the beauty that is Nature. It is in our culture that we need to develop our sense of connection with the Land. The values of our community have somehow left the Land behind. What I have hoped is that Earth Day might develop into a vehicle for that community connection.

But now things do not look good. Even here in Rockport, where love of Land and Sea runs deep, Earth Day passed with only a whimper. Our economy has been down, and we are at war. These things hang heavily on everyone’s mind, and few feel the jubilant enthusiasm for cleaning up litter that a couple of years ago gave so many pleasure. Perhaps because cleaning up litter misses the point?

As I said, for me, Earth Day is about our communal sense of love for our Planet – Mother Earth. With serious issues dominating the global scene, it takes more than just picking up a few bottles and cans to satisfy our need. We need a holiday celebration that fills our hearts and souls, and contributes to the welfare of the Earth we live on.

So. Now I have spoken my mind about Earth Day. It sure is nice to have this place on the internet to express myself. Earth Day 2004 is past, and now May Day is upon us. What a lovely combination of holidays. They go together so well.

Our May Day Festivities will feature The Stone Lady, Terry Milton. She will join us afternoons on Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd. She will be doing stone readings from her tray of rocks and crystals (read About the Stone Lady here). One of Terry’s favorite things is to do her readings at Renaissance Fairs, dressed in full costume. We are following her lead and decking ourselves out. If you are in the area, join us for this happiest of Spring celebrations.

    Rock Your World

Herkimer Diamond # 1 “This month at darkstaronline.com we are proud to feature some phenomenal Herkimer Diamonds that were mined in Herkimer, New York. Mining the treasured “Herkimers” requires strength and perseverance, as these incredible 500-million year old crystals are imbedded in a hard rock... Individuals who are drawn to Herkimer Diamonds have an uncanny ability to awaken and inspire others. Just as the sparkling Herkimers are among the most brilliant crystals in the world, those who are drawn to Herkimer Diamonds are also bright, spontaneous, intelligent, and often appear to have tapped into an ancient wisdom...”

    Check Out Bill Adams

We feature Bill’s Earth Echoes Crystals here at Dark Star Philosophia. One of the reasons we like carrying his crystals is because he digs so many of them himself – with a stick. This is very different from the mass-mining that produces most of the crystals available to us today. The impact on the earth and the indigenous cultures of the mass-mining areas is tremendous. Bill, on the other hand, leaves only a small hole in the ground.

You can see and feel the difference in the crystals, too. Bill’s crystals are fresh and alive. They sparkle. We have a picture for you of Bill Adams digging for crystal treasure in Brazil. For more on Bill and Earth Echoes Crystals click here: Earth Echoes Crystals

    Butterfly Faeries

Our cost for Pewter Faeries with Butterfly Wings, from The Faerie Kingdom Collection, has gone down, at least for now. We are passing this savings along to you, for as long as it lasts. The small faeries, which were $39.95, are now $29.00. The larger Mother and Child, which was $98.00, is now $84.00.

    A Stimulating Exchange

I got an interesting response to my writings last month about the meaning of the name Dark Star Philosophia from my friend Bill Montague, of the Montague Gallery (www.MontagueGallery.com). I said: “The nature of physical creation is yin-yang. Opposites. Paradox is resolved when you raise your perspective to the spiritual level, to even greater truth – to a truth that unites the other two.” He gave me his opinion on opposites. He says that they do not exist. We had a lively exchange of emails, and we thought you might like to eavesdrop (I have done some very minor grammatical editing to make our letters easier for you to read):

    From Bill:

Reading your news letter about opposites.

I have an opinion of “no opposites”. Say light and dark for instance. There is only light - and less light. In other words, you cannot generate dark. But you can make light and less and less light - but not dark.

Take hot and cold. Opposites right? I say no. There is only heat and less and less heat, but you cannot make cold. You can make heat and remove heat to the point we have coined the word "cold". Even if we say we can cool things down to absolute zero there is still some heat left, so there is no such thing as absolute zero. Because you can always go below absolute zero. Just because we humans cannot get there is no reason to believe we cannot remove even more and more of the heat that is left.

Take love and hate. I believe there is only one emotion - Love. There is less and less love, but you cannot destroy love. What we coined as the word hate is just a lot less love - but even then if you try to remove all love it cannot be done. Take an example: you hate someone and you wish them dead or something really bad, but if that person were on the edge of a cliff and about to fall you would save them if you could. The reason behind your action would be love of life and by the saving that person you would hope the person would change and show you love for your saving of their life.

So for me I have been trying out this no opposites theory.

To me there seems to be only one of everything. Like one energy in our world that shows up in different forms but it is only one energy, just in different forms. Then we go and give those different forms names like light, gravity, and wind, sun, and water power. We are all made of the same "stuff", We and our world just operate at different frequencies that give us the differences we see, like rocks and water and air. But it is all the same stuff. When we brought back rocks from the moon they were all made up of the same stuff as our rocks.

Try that one on for size. See ya, Bill

    From gera:

Took me a minute - clearly you are right. But I've got a comment.

There are poles. Positive and Negative. Male-Female. Light-Dark. Were there no poles, there would be no magnetism. Were there no magnetism, there would be no physical reality as we know it.

Of course, get out of physical reality, and you get to the point of unity.

So how does that all fit together?

    From Bill:

Male and Female: we all start out the same: from the one egg. Then we take on different roles - not opposite, just different, like the water and the rocks. Same stuff, different appearance. But all made from the same stuff.

The poles of North and South: the magnetism just goes in circles back and forth so they also are almost the same, just a little difference.

Magnetism or gravity sounds like the same stuff to me just a little different. It is still energy reacting a little differently - but not much.

Positive and negative are coined words we created, like light and dark. Is there really a positive and a negative, or are they almost the same only just a little different?

    See ya, Bill

    From gera:

    Paradox.

    In Conclusion:

I would like to thank Bill for letting me have the last word. (After all, where do you go from “Paradox”?) Bill is a gentleman indeed, and wise. And, as all wise men know, it is best to let the woman have the last word.
