Dark*Starry*Nights

Yangga Trarong’s Dark*Starry*Night

We have been honored and blessed to host Yangga Trarong, Doctor of Tibetan Medicine, at Dark Star Philosophia. This wonderful, gentle man, who goes out of his way not to tread on the toes of Western Medical beliefs, is a highly intelligent and talented practioner of Tibetan Medicine. On December 28th, Yangga spent an evening with us introducing the basic principles of this ancient healing system, based primarily on herbs and body types.

Yangga grew up in Tibet. His parents were nomads. He is an Assistant Professor of Tibetan Medicine at Tibetan Medical College in Lhasa, Tibet. He is now a Doctoral Candidate at Harvard, studying for his degree while learning to master English (he does very well). Yangga practiced medicine in Tibet for 12 years before coming to the United States.

Tibetan Medicine is an extremely effective healing system. It is slow in its action, for the most part. You do not see results within a half hour, like you do when you take a Western Medicine pill. But given time and consistency, Tibetan Medicine can treat long-standing ailments that frustrate American doctors.

Yangga Returns Saturday, February 11th to see patients. Appointments are now available.

Rock Your World

Opalized Quartz is also known as Girasol Quartz. It’s not very common, and, as always, The Stone Lady has interesting things to tell you. Be sure to read this issue of Rock Your World: Opalized Quartz.

We are very happy to be able to offer you Opalized Quartz Hearts for Valentine’s Day.

Recycling

I was recycling back in the ‘70’s. At the time, the only place I knew that had recycling was Rockport. I lived 45 minutes away in Salem. I remember standing in my kitchen washing and crushing tin cans to bring to Rockport’s recycling station. I believed in it then.

I still do it, but I no longer believe in it. It’s like shoveling . . . against the tide.

Recycling is the last of the 3 R’s: "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". But, at least in this neck of the woods, it gets by far the most emphasis. I know very few people who reuse very much. And the "reduce" part is a farce. We produce and use more and more all the time.

Some of us recycle, some of us don’t. None of us can possibly recycle all that we use. But we spend a lot of time (and water) rinsing our plastics and tin cans, then sorting them in separate containers. If you are lucky enough to have curbside recycling, you probably recycle less – because your containers really can’t hold all that you use. Or maybe you get to take your cans, papers and plastics to a recycling station yourself – like we do in Rockport. Oh, that’s a joy. Trash goes over here, paper goes over there, plastics in another place, tin cans in another, heavy metal in yet another, and cardboard in yet another. I’m beginning to feel like a rat in a maze.

I miss the simple days when you just threw out your trash! Which was much, much less in those days, by the way. Remember Henry David Thoreau’s "Simplify, simplify!"?

Recycling was never meant to be the most important of the 3 R’s – that’s why it’s the last of the three. Reduce is the first. With so much focus on recycling, we lose sight of reducing and reusing, and we’re burying ourselves in a life of getting rid of trash. Not my idea of an ideal way to live.
