First and Foremost: This past June
Bearskin Neck hosted our

First Annual Rockport Fairy & Gnome Festival

We could not be more fortunate in the excellent people who contributed to the First Annual Rockport Fairy & Gnome Festival on Saturday & Sunday, Fathers' Day Weekend, at the time of the Summer Solstice.

Organized by the Rockport Fairy & Gnome Festival Committee (a title that earned us more than a few giggles around town), we had a small, but wonderful beginning. (Laurel and gera of Dark Star Philosophia and Terry, The Stone Lady were privileged to be on this wonderful committee, which functions in an organic, rather than a formally structured, manner.)

With only one week's notice on our final location - having been flooded out of Magical Millbrook Meadow when the damn broke during spring rains - we were happy to be able to pull it off at all.

The festival centered in Seafencibles Park, next to White Wharf at the end of Old Harbor Road, on the dirt road just beyond Dark Star Philosophia. But the celebration actually filled the entire Bearskin Neck area, spilling into Dock Square.

The minstrels and our storyteller were not the only people in costume. Lovers of "The Little People" came from all over, by car and by train, dressed for the occasion.

Thank heaven for our wonderful and talented contributors! Mary Shallbetter - Mythic Storyteller (and creator of Dark Star Philosophia's popular Fairy Houses); Caera - Medieval Harpist and Singer in Gaelic Languages; The Harper & The Minstrel - Harp, Flute & Lyrics; Jay Michaels & Brittan Davis; Michelle Herrara - Viola & Singing Bowls; and, of course, our own Terry Milton, The Stone Lady, doing Stone Readings. As well as the generous volunteers who pitched in with afternoon workshops for children in Seafencibles Park.

While everyone else worked and played at the festival, I worked in Philosophia. It was fun. Lots of costumed friends dropped in - would that I had not been too busy to take pictures!

But the real magic came around 3:00 on Sunday afternoon. I felt the ground beneath my feet lighten up, and my legs started dancing to the Celtic music all around me. I felt a feeling of "home" such as I have only felt a very few times in my life. The fairies and gnomes had arrived! And they stayed for the rest of the day.

This year the Second Annual Rockport Fairy & Gnome Festival will be held just before the Summer Solstice on Father's Day weekend, June 16th & 17th on Bearskin Neck and in Seafencibles Park. We will have more time to plan, we will have more contributors, and we will be better organized! Mark your calendar, and come join us as we grow. The Little People are counting on us all.

Dark*Starry*Nights

Dark Star Philosophia has been privileged to host a number of fine evening presentations over this past year:

Santina Design's Pauline Doody's Dark*Starry*Night
(June 29th)

"Feng Shui and the Home"

Feng Shui is now enjoying a wide popularity, but few of us understand much about its basic principles. Pauline Doody has been studying Black Sect Feng Shui, the school of Feng Shui most widely known in the United States, for many years. Feng Shui means Wind & Water, and is all about the movement of energy in space. Each item that you place in your space influences that energy, for better or for worse. It follows that you, too be influenced by energy of the space that you occupy. What is amazing is the extent of that influence into every area of life. And so it is very important to have good energy in the space you occupy most intimately - your home.

Pauline introduced the "Bagua" - a map of the sectors of a given space and the areas of life that they influence - career, relationship, health, wealth, reputation, etc. She then proceeded to explain how the Bagua is used, and how its concepts integrate with interior design. Each Dark*Starry*Night participant was asked to bring a copy of their bedroom floor plan to analyze with Pauline. As a group, we got a chance to watch Pauline apply Feng Shui principles to each floor plan. Feng Shui is pragmatic. There are almost always options. In any given case, there is a variety of ways to accomplish good energy flow.

It was an introductory evening that left us all anxious to know more, and ready to apply Feng Shui to our own homes.

Ganesha Yoga's Carla Mattioli's Dark*Starry*Night
(October 20th)

"Flower Essences: Gifts from Mother Nature"

I have known Carla for a number of years. She is a superbly tuned-in woman, and I recommend scheduling a visit with her for the next time you come to Rockport. Her bright and colorful paintings put a smile on your face, and her yoga classes enjoy a steady following. But it is her knowledge of flower essences that interested us in her Dark*Starry*Night presentation.

Flower Essences are related to Homeopathy. They contain, quite literally, nothing of the original flower. They consist solely of water, a preservative (often brandy) & the vibration that remains in the water after floating a flower in it in the sun. They make you smile. They are so extremely simple, so inexpensive, and so amazingly effective...

Carla offered us a slide show, and related the traits of the flowers to their effects on people (and animals) as flower essences. Subtle healers, they guide us gently to better health on all levels - spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical.

Stacey's Dark*Starry*Night
(December 6th)

"Stacey & Stones"

Stacey is a jeweller by trade. As you can see from these pictures, she is a mistress of wire wrapping. When you spend a career working with stones, as Stacey has, you cannot help but pick up on their innate characteristics. Stacey, having an esoteric nature, has developed her own unique perspective on their influences, especially when worn on the body as jewellery.

In her Dark*Starry*Night here, Stacey offered us a chance to discover some of our own reactions to her stones. Through a series of short meditations, we sat with a number of different stones, letting our minds discover their messages for us.

I am always amazed in such groups at each person's unique creative sensitivities. Some reactions were very direct; others, like dreams, were fraught with symbolism. Most stones produced a common theme in all members of the group, but with one or two of stones individuals had opposite reactions. (Just as in life different people react differently to the same stimuli, such as colors, we often find that we have different reactions to the same stones.) In all cases, the meditations were interesting and informative. A reminder to pay attention to the stones that we wear on our bodies.

Stacey sent us each away with stones to keep, and to continue to influence our lives in a positive way. A very fun evening.

See some of Stacey's exquisite wire-wrapped stones in our catalog here: Stacey's.

Geshe Gendun Gyatso’s Dark*Starry*Night
(December 13th)

"Karma"

I am proud to call Geshe Gendun Gyatso my friend. As I have written a number of times before in Supernova, Gendun is not only a wise spiritual guide, he is a delight. He has a dedicated following in our area.

His classes here at Dark Star Philosophia are always well attended, and this class on Karma was no exception. Karma is a vast subject, one that raises many questions that have no simple answers. Yet each of us left at the end of the class feeling satisfied with what we had learned in a very short period of time. We were satisfied not only in our minds, but also in our souls. A class with Gendun is a healing experience.

Gendun has returned to his monastery in India for the Winter. He has promised to return in the Spring. We will keep you posted.

Caera's Sunday Afternoon Concert
(December 17th)

Caera plays a clairseach, a brass-strung harp modeled after historical harps of Ireland from the Middle Ages, and sings in all three Gaelic languages (Irish, Scottish, and Manx), as well as in other languages. Along with her friend Michelle Herrara, she graced The First Annual Rockport Fairy & Gnome Festival this past June with her harp's ethereal tones and her beautiful singing voice. She will be at the festival again this year. You can almost see the fairies dancing around her fingertips as she plays.

On Sunday, December 17th Caera came to Dark Star Philosophia for an afternoon and played to our Christmas shoppers. As she sat playing and singing on the balcony overlooking the lower level of the shop, she enchanted us all.
