Herkimer Diamonds
This month at darkstaronline.com we are proud to feature some phenomenal Herkimer Diamonds that were mined in Herkimer, New York. Mining the treasured “Herkimers” requires strength and perseverance, as these incredible 500-million year old crystals are imbedded in a hard rock commonly known as dolostone, a combination of dolomite and limestone.
Although resembling the geometrical shape of diamonds, the world-famous Herkimer Diamonds are 18-sided quartz crystals created over 500 million years ago, rather than true diamonds. A Herkimer Diamonds usually has an upper, a middle, and a lower facet on each of six sides. They are naturally beautiful, and have no need to be cut, faceted, or otherwise enhanced by humans. The crystals that are around ˝” and smaller in size tend to have the greatest clarity and brilliance, and are transparent. The larger crystals frequently have many visible inclusions, and are more translucent than transparent.
Individuals who are drawn to Herkimer Diamonds have an uncanny ability to awaken and inspire others. Just as the sparkling Herkimers are among the most brilliant crystals in the world, those who are drawn to Herkimer Diamonds are also bright, spontaneous, intelligent, and often appear to have tapped into an ancient wisdom.
Herkimer Diamond #1: The first Herkimer Diamond specimen featured this month is water clear, with multi-layers of beautiful internal rainbows. There appears to be a tiny water bubble inside, suggesting a heightened sensitivity and untarnished innocence in the person who ultimately connects with this crystal. Those who would be immediately attracted to this crystal are perceptive, intelligent, and optimistic, and may be hoping for some assistance in dealing with an unpleasant or stressful situation. This crystal has fragments of the matrix still attached. From some angles the remaining matrix hints of a dwarf or gnome, suggesting that the person connected with this crystal has a deep love for the earth, a strong connection with nature spirits, and an awareness of the importance of oral and written history. Tiny black inclusions in this crystal are anthraxolite, a petrified plant life: they seem to encourage the correct individual to let go of fear surrounding the planting, cultivating, and harvesting of new seeds of hopes and dreams.

Herkimer Diamond #2: This Herkimer appears to be stained on internal levels with a yellowish-gold inclusion. The coloration is a result of iron oxide, or rust that seeped in eons ago. This stone will connect with people who have felt as though they have been inactive for too long, or are feeling “a little rusty.” It would be a helpful gem for those who are ready to work through old issues, particularly those involving shame or embarrassment. The awakening power of this stone would be well suited for someone with a desire to change but a resistance to taking the first steps. It is a great stone for someone needing to focus on the here and now.
