Hematite
Hematite, a form of iron oxide, has insightful and protective qualities. In its polished state, Hematite is usually a black or shiny gray, and has served as a mirror. It is an important iron ore, and is an ideal stone for those who wish to "iron out" some of their issues. Hematite is reflective, and the people who are drawn to Hematite have usually looked at their own reflection, or have looked inward, long enough and often enough to see things clearly. They are able to obtain many of their own answers.
Hematite is one of five stones that are, in my opinion, necessities for those who are transitioning from the "old" into the "new." (More on the other 4 in future columns.) It is invaluable for those in the midst of changes, as well as those who need to stay strong and grounded.
Hematite is probably the oldest stone on our planet. When Hematite is among the first stones to be selected from my stone tray, I tend to recognize the individual as an "old soul," who has decided to incarnate on Earth at this time, although not for the usual opportunities or karmic lessons that draw the majority of us to this planet.
The Hematite person is an old soul with a strong commitment to teach and share some of the wisdom of the ages. The Hematite person is a born leader and teacher, possessing many tools that are a necessity, although in short supply, in today's world.
Hematite individuals are usually the "Dear Abby's" among their peers; the ones who are expected to offer advice, council, support, encouragement, and wisdom to those who need it. Wearing or carrying a piece of hematite would be beneficial to most folks, as it carries a gentle reminder that it is one thing to be attuned to the people who are in need of help, but it is not always wise to take on the problems and burdens of those you are attempting to help.
Hematite was used in cave paintings, and is used today in cosmetics, lipstick, and a pigment for face and body painting. Traditionally, Hematite is associated with the blood and the kidney's blood cleansing functions, although it is probably best known for its assistance in staying grounded, strong and focused. Many believe that Hematite will dissolve negativity, while others depend on hematite as an antidote to flightiness!
Hematite, because of its large iron content, is considered to be among the most protective of the stones. In ancient times, soldiers rubbed hematite on their bodies, believing it would keep them safe. Today, Hematite is often used to provide protection on many levels, including physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and psychic. It has many helpful qualities, and I recommend a tumbled Hematite stone to be carried in one's pocket as a talisman or worry stone!
