Rock Your World!
by Terry Milton, The Stone Lady

Lodestone / Magnetite
We enjoy featuring wonderful stones, crystals, and gems of unparalleled beauty in both our
online newsletter and in our Rockport location. It is sometimes challenging, both with
people and with stones, to acknowledge the inner, altruistic, and intrinsic beauty rather
than the obvious surface, superficial, or predictable outer beauty.
Although there are no shortages of extraordinary gemstones to feature in
future darkstaronline.com newsletters, I wanted to try something a little
different for this month's Rock Your World column. This month's darkstaronline.com
selection is one of the original "you can't judge a book by its cover" stones, the Lodestone (also known as Magnetite).

There are theories and scientific experiments that suggest iron oxide, when struck by
lightning, becomes the highly magnetic Lodestone. I have no scientific training, and prefer
to think of the Lodestone as an omen that conditions are on the upswing and will soon improve.
When selected from my stone tray, the Lodestone serves as a reminder that we have the ability
and the power to attract that which we need, and to send away those things that no longer serve
a purpose in our lives. Choosing to carry a Lodestone can be an indication that a period of bad
luck has run its course, or that the negativity that presents itself from time to time will soon
find a positive resolution or balance. The Lodestone heralds an opportunity for the healing of a
damaged relationship, and for the "lifting of an ancient curse," or a burden that we have carried for far too long!
Many years ago, the phrase "the lifting of an ancient curse" came to mind repeatedly during my
meditations on the Lodestone. I would later learn that some cultures attributed the Lodestone's
magnetism to a resident demon or evil spirit. One can imagine that if a curse were lifted, the
demon or evil spirit involved would have to take up residence elsewhere.
The highly magnetic Lodestone can be considered one of the original compasses. Just as it was
used to help sailors as they traveled to the "ends of the earth," a Lodestone can be an indication
that one will soon be on their correct path, or will find their way "back home." Lodestone reminds
us of our own power and potential. It can indicate that one has "found" oneself, or that one is
ready for action, perhaps to reclaim one's self-esteem, strengths, self-control, and power that
may have been stolen, carelessly discarded, or relinquished.
Lodestone usually does not find its way into a showcase or display of beautiful gems. Lodestone's
physical appearance would hardly be described as breathtaking, exciting, awe-inspiring, exquisite,
or dazzling. Yet, it is a remarkable rock - like certain people that I know -- that I would not trade for the world!
I wrote the following poem some twenty-odd years ago, after weeks of working and playing with the
Lodestone, while trying to understand what an "ancient curse" could possibly be.
May all of your "ancient curses" be lifted! May you have all that you need, all that you want,
and all that you desire in the coming year!
Lodestone: The Legend of the Wicked Sorcerer
by Terry "The Stone Lady" Milton
Our story begins eons ago when two moons ruled the sea
And the dreadful Wicked Sorcerer loved Lady Destiny
But his affection and advances, Lady Destiny refused
The Sorcerer, to say the least, was not at all amused!
Lady Destiny's disinterest clearly angered him
How dare she not be dazzled by his every wicked whim?
He plotted his revenge. He was driven. He was haunted.
Capable of anything to get that which he wanted.
"If I can't have you, Lady Destiny, you will have NO ONE!"
(And a curse issued in anger is not easily undone!)
Destiny clutched a clump of dirt, squeezed with all her might
Turning the dirt into Lodestone, now known as magnetite!
Lady Destiny threw her striking stone with an ungodly force
She hurt more than the Sorcerer's pride, of course!
Today, the Wicked Sorcerer, still brimming with surprises
Is known to masquerade in some imaginative disguises
Ever is he cautious now, his wicked ways well known
He seldom curses anyone; he spends his days alone
A wiser Wicked Sorcerer, celibate and dejected
Knows that if you mess with Destiny, expect the unexpected!
