Ganesh, the Elephant God, is the Lord of Success and Remover of Obstacles. The son of Shiva and Parvati. Ganesh has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth.
The curve of Ganeshs trunk indicates the nature of obstacles to be removed. When his trunk curves to his right, the obstacle is of the material world. When his trunk curves to his left, the obstacle is of a spiritual nature. The trunk on our Ganesh curves to his left indicating the removal of spiritual obstacles.
Nancy has paid great attention to detail in the creation of this altar. The scrollwork around the outside of the altar symbolizes the lotus: spiritual perfection growing out of mud and the waters of creation. Notice especially the handmade wallpaper from India, and the tilework on the floor. The delicate resin statue is refined and highly detailed. Flowers and coconuts are offerings commonly brought to Hindu temples for worship. An open coconut signifies a heart that has opened itself to the divine.
When Nancy first brought her Ganesh Altar to Dark Star Philosophia, it was intact, and beautiful. Some time later, I noticed that pieces of the Ganesh statue had been broken off in two places. No missing pieces were to be found. I myself had moved the altar about a week earlier. We do not know what happened to poor Ganesh, but the most likely explanation would be that I broke him.
So I had to tell Nancy what had happened. (I needed a replacement statue!) She immediately wanted to know what obstacle I had needed to have removed! Little did she know how big an obstacle had recently vanished from my life - a business decision that had become a major hurdle had suddenly found a way to resolve itself. I never made the connection with Ganesh until she pointed it out. I have kept the broken statue as a momento.
We now have a wonderful new Ganesh statue on the Altar.
Ganeshs altar has a small nightlight on a cord that sits behind his statue. A small descriptive pamphlet is also included.

"The creator of this wonderful Ganesh Altar is Nancy Strisik. Lest there be any confusion about who Nancy is, Id like to point out that there are 2 Nancy Strisiks. Paul Strisik, the artist, went to school in New York City with my father. He moved to Rockport a number of years before we did. Paul died a few years ago, and Nancy Strisik his wife continues to manage his gallery with great dignity and charm.
Paul also had a cousin named Nancy. This is our Nancy, the creator of our lovely Hindu Altars. Oddly enough, I knew nothing of Nancys existence until I met her in a workshop in Boston, about oh my, can it be that long? 20 years ago. We were studying crystals and things Native American at the time, and we went to quite a number of workshops together. Nancy has continued to grow and develop since that time. Her new Hindu altars carry with them her ever-deepening spiritual understanding. We are proud to offer them to you."
