"Before telling you about Nancy’s wonderful Hindu Altars, I want to clear up any confusion that might arise about who Nancy is, because there are 2 Nancy Strisiks. Paul Strisik, the artist, went to school in New York City with my father. He moved to Rockport a number of years before we did. Paul died a few years ago, and Nancy Strisik – his wife – continues to manage his gallery with great dignity and charm.
Paul also had a cousin named Nancy. This is “our” Nancy, the creator of our lovely Hindu Altars. Oddly enough, I knew nothing of Nancy’s existence until I met her in a workshop in Boston, about – oh my, can it be that long? – 20 years ago. We were studying crystals and things Native American at the time, and we went to quite a number of workshops together."

Dark Star Philosophia
Nancy is now offering her Lakshmi Altar at Dark Star Philosophia, and we are most pleased to have it here. Lakshmi is the goddess of Good Fortune and Abundance. She is the embodiment of loveliness, grace and charm. It is she who grants liberation from the cycle of life and death.
In the scroll work around the outside of the altar you will find the third eye (organ of sight into other dimensions), the lotus (spiritual perfection growing out of mud and the waters of creation), and a representation of swans (which represent discriminatory power between right and wrong, as well as the real and unreal).
This Lakshmi Altar also has a Rangoli, which slides in and out from underneath the altar. A Rangoli is a painted prayer, an intricate and ritual design, much like a sand mandala. Indian women spend much time in front of their houses every morning creating their Rangoli from white stone, lime, rice flour and other materials, only to have their visitors walk all over them all day long. This is the prayer and the blessing. A new Rangoli is created the next morning. Rangoli are found everywhere, especially in places of worship.
The altars Nancy makes for Creations of the Sacred are always lit. Lakshmi’s altar has a small nightlight on a cord that sits behind her statue. A small descriptive “pamphlet” is also included.

Nancy’s altars are created with great attention to Hindu symbolism. The delicate resin statue is refined, and feminine, and highly detailed. All the major elements of offerings brought to Hindu temples for worship are represented: flowers, and fruits and nuts, and coconuts. An open coconut signifies a heart that has opened itself to the divine.
I was concerned about placing so beautiful and delicate an altar on a counter in Dark Star Philosophia where all our customers can reach it. Nancy told me not to be concerned. She says the altar is a highly interactive piece. If I ask that it be protected and that it reach the soul who needs it, then it will be so.
