There are a variety of ways to use Singing Bowls. Singing Bowls: A Practical Handbook of Instruction and Use, and Singing Bowl Exercises for Personal Harmony, offer instruction in their use.

Most often you find them "played" with our wooden stick, creating a tone by running the stick around the outside of the bowl. Sometimes water is put inside, too. They are used in ceremony, in healing, in meditation, and in space clearing.

With a little bit of practice, you can learn to “play” a Tibetan Singing Bowl. They are capable of a wide range of notes, and complex overlays of sound. They create a vibration in the room that goes right through you. It is the vibration that creates the profound healing effects of Singing Bowls. It is best to choose your own Singing Bowl, as each one is very individual, with its own unique sound. But for those who do not have direct access to them (Come and visit us in Rockport!), this is a very good second best.

Traditionally, Tibetan Singing Bowls were made with 7 metals, each representing one of the first 7 planets, but this is no longer the case. No longer made in Tibet, which is now occupied by China, these Singing Bowls are hand-made from brass.

Our friend Geshe Gendun Gyatso, a Tibetan monk, spends much of his time in the United States. He also travels to India regularly, and returns with Tibetan Singing Bowls, among other things, for us to sell. The sale of these bowls helps to support him and his work in this country. Gendun teaches frequently at the Jabberwocky Bookstore in Newburyport, Massachusetts - a wonderful bookstore not far from us. He has created, along with a fellow monk, both here and in Chicago, several Sand Mandalas for the healing of our world. (A tradition held in common with the Hopi people of the American Southwest, Sand Mandalas are intricate works of art filled with prayer and intention. When the artwork is completed, the sand is collected and poured into the waters of the Earth, releasing the prayers held within.) Gendun’s primary work in this country is Spiritual Counseling and Spiritual Teaching.
